About the role….

We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated and pro-active Greenhouse Research Associate to join our fast-growing team at Inari Ghent, who is committed and passionate about developing 21st century solutions to address global food challenges. As a Phenotyping RA  you will primarily focus on lab and/or greenhouse phenotyping activities in different crops to accelerate our knowledge generation and discovery activities. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and hands-on executing phenotyping tasks (both root and shoot) with a focus on maize and soy.

This position is a hands-on role responsible for effective delivery, troubleshooting and putting ideas into action. You will ensure experiments are executed efficiently and correctly, while taking initiative to improve protocols where necessary. The right candidate enjoys a “start-up” atmosphere and is flexible, shows good judgment, takes initiative and is willing to take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to achieve goals and deliverables. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role as part of an interdisciplinary team.

As a Phenotyping RA  you will …

  • Support and taking ownership of specific tasks for the development, implementation and execution of phenotypic assays performed both in the lab and greenhouse (e.g. collecting data, subsequent data processing pipeline and converting data to biological interpretable results)
  • Be responsible for manual and technical phenotyping development/execution (manual measurements, hardware, software and data processing) and be able to link the derived traits to plant performance. 
  • Depending on the project, apply phenotypic technologies ranging from self developed assays/platforms to automatic platforms via third party collaborators, from plant sensors (e.g. Licors) to image collection and processing (e.g. microscopic RGB).
  • Work with other Research Associates, Scientists and third party collaborators to design and execute root and shoot phenotyping activities related to multiple projects.
  • Maintain a clean working environment
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of your work, project data you generate and other information as needed
  • Work with colleagues to troubleshoot and develop effective solutions when problems occur
  • Participate in scientific discussions and present research outcomes to peers and management

You bring...

  • Master’s degree in the area of plant biology, plant biotechnology, agriculture, plant and soil science or equivalent by 5 years experience 
  • Experience with plant phenotyping in the field and/or controlled environment is essential and a sense of ownership and autonomy in these tasks
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience with assay development for root and shoot phenotyping
  • Experience with image analyses and/or plant biochemistry  is a plus
  • Familiarity with record keeping (electronic lab notebooks, seed and field trial management systems) 
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (QMS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)  and Work Instructions (WI)
  • A flexible mindset and an eye for detail
  • A proactive attitude, and willingness to be bold and take risks
  • An efficient and well organized approach to deliver high quality results on time with integrity
  • A collaborative mindset, open to giving and receiving ideas, perspectives and feedback
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral
  • A valid driver license
