About the role….

We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated and proactive Greenhouse Research Associate to join our fast-growing team at Inari Ghent, who is committed and passionate about developing 21st century solutions to address global food challenges. 

As a Greenhouse RA you will primarily focus on greenhouse work to support the development of improved soy and corn plants. 

This position is a hands-on role responsible for effective delivery, troubleshooting and putting ideas into action. You will ensure experiments are executed efficiently and correctly, while taking initiative to improve protocols where necessary. The right candidate enjoys a “start-up” atmosphere and is flexible, shows good judgment, takes initiative and is willing to take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to achieve goals and deliverables. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role as part of an interdisciplinary team.

As a Research Associate, you will …

  • Work with other Research Associates and Scientists to execute greenhouse activities  related to multiple projects
  • Be responsible for hands-on greenhouse and growth chamber activities, such as sowing & planting of seedlings, preparing and performing crosses, harvesting seed and embryo’s, cleaning up seeds,  transportation of plants, …
  • Responsible for the general plant care in the greenhouse and growth cabinets (maintaining clean cabinets, preventing diseases, etc)
  • Support seed stock management by seed number registration in inventory system, complete seed requests, support seed shipments
  • Perform sampling of plants in the Greenhouse and/or growth cabinets
  • Perform hands-on phenotyping activities
  • Support general facility activities (waste management, equipment, maintenance, …)
  • Support growth media preparation in the lab
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of your work, project data you generate and other information as needed
  • Work with colleagues to troubleshoot and develop effective solutions when problems occur
  • Participate in scientific discussions and present research outcomes to peers and management

You bring...

  • Bachelor’s degree in the area of greenhouse management, plant management, crop science, agronomy, horticulture, or related field
  • Experience with plant care and with greenhouse work is essential and a sense of ownership and autonomy in these tasks
  • Experience with plant management in controlled conditions (growth chambers, greenhouses…) is a plus
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience with basic lab techniques (media preparation, buffers etc) or a strong motivation to learn this skill on the job
  • Familiarity with record keeping (electronic lab notebooks, seed management systems) 
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (QMS), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)  and Work Instructions (WI)
  • A proactive attitude, and willingness to be bold and take risks
  • An efficient and well organized approach to deliver high quality results on time with integrity
  • A collaborative mindset, open to giving and receiving ideas, perspectives and feedback
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral
  • A valid driving license

 Bonus Qualifications...

  • A basic understanding of  genome editing technologies and crop improvement 
  • Experience with tissue culture techniques or molecular analysis techniques
